Frequently Asked Questions

  • Bottomlands Press offers a full suite of independent publishing services designed for aspiring authors, self-publishers, and organizations at every stage of the process. Our core services include:

Book Formatting & Production — We format manuscripts for KDP print and ebook distribution, including proper trim sizing, margin setup, recto/verso pagination, and blank page insertion for a professional print-ready PDF. We also produce EPUB files formatted for Kindle, IngramSpark, and wide distribution.

Cover Design — We create original book covers tailored to your genre, trim size, and target readership — built to compete on the shelf and in the thumbnail.

Publishing Consultation — Not sure if your book is ready to publish? We offer paid consultations covering manuscript readiness, platform strategy, pen name considerations, series architecture, and KDP account setup.

Author Affiliate Listing — We feature select independently published titles in the Bottomlands Press catalog and route readers directly to your sales page — Amazon, KDP, your author website, wherever you sell. You keep full control of your book and your royalties. We handle the placement and the traffic. $15/month or $120/year per title.

Imprint Publishing — We selectively publish titles under the Bottomlands Press imprint, with particular interest in Southern fiction, Delta literature, true crime, and regional nonfiction. Selected authors receive full production, distribution, and catalog placement.

Bespoke Destination Books — We research, write, and produce custom books for destinations, tourism organizations, CVBs, and heritage sites. These are fully original works — narrative histories, travel guides, cultural portraits — produced under your brand or ours, and built to serve as both visitor experience and lasting keepsake.

Bookselling & Retail Placement — We carry select titles in our online shop and work with regional bookstores across Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Alabama for authors with a regional story to tell.

Whether you're publishing your first book, building a backlist, or commissioning a bespoke work for your destination or organization, Bottomlands Press brings real-world production experience — and deep roots in Southern heritage — to every project.

  • Getting started is simple. Reach out through our contact form or schedule a call—we’ll walk you through the next steps and answer any questions along the way.

  • Most publishing services are transactional. You upload a file, get a formatted document back, and figure out the rest yourself. Bottomlands Press works differently.

We are a working press. Every service we offer is something we do ourselves, across a growing catalog of titles spanning literary fiction, true crime, humor, romance, children's books, and regional nonfiction. When we format your manuscript or design your cover, we're drawing on the same process we use for our own books — not a template, not a subcontractor, not a guess.

We bring a regional identity that's genuinely rare. Bottomlands Press is rooted in the Mississippi Delta — one of the most culturally rich and underrepresented regions in American publishing. That's not marketing language. Our founder is a sixth-generation Mississippian with fifteen years in Delta heritage tourism, destination marketing, and cultural storytelling. That perspective shapes everything we publish and every client we serve.

We think like publishers, not vendors. Beyond production, we understand positioning, genre conventions, series architecture, regional distribution, and the long game of building a catalog. If your book has commercial potential, we'll tell you. If it needs more work, we'll tell you that too.

We specialize in stories that belong to a place. From destination books for tourism organizations to literary fiction set in the American South, we know how to make a book feel like it could only have come from one particular corner of the world — and why that matters to readers.

If you're looking for the cheapest path to a published file, we're probably not your best option. If you want a publishing partner who takes your work seriously, we might be exactly the right fit.

  • Honest answer: we're a small, working press — not a publishing conglomerate with account managers and ticketing systems. When you work with Bottomlands Press, you work with Sean Johnson directly.

That means a few things. It means your project gets real attention, not a template applied by someone who hasn't read your manuscript. It means straight talk — if your book needs more work before it's ready to publish, we'll tell you. It also means we bring a genuine sense of ownership to every project we take on. We don't separate ourselves from the work.

We're also, frankly, building something. Bottomlands Press is a growing imprint with a point of view and a regional identity, and the authors and organizations we work with are part of that story. When your book carries our name — or when we help bring yours to life — we have skin in the game. That's not a sales pitch. It's just how we operate.

If you want a hands-off vendor who processes files and moves on, there are cheaper options. If you want someone who treats your book like it matters, we might be the right fit.
